KINO BAY OR BAHIA DE KINO

Kino Bay is located on the Gulf of California in the state of Sonora, Mexico and was once described by author John Steinbeck as “God’s Aquarium”.  It is located 500 miles (4.5 hour drive) south of the US/Arizona border.  The names “Bahia de Kino” and “Kino Bay” are also used interchangeably.

The town is administered as part of the municipality of Hermosillo.  Hermosillo, home to an international airport, is 65 miles east of Kino Bay, and attainable via paved road (rental car service and taxi service to Kino Bay available at the airport).  It is the closest seaside resort to Hermosillo, and, as such, has become a popular weekend/holiday destination for American tourists.

Founded in 1920 as a fishing camp, Kino Bay is home to 7,000 local inhabitants.  The primary economic activity revolves around fishing, although commerce and services are also central to the local economy.  A large shrimp fleet is based in Kino Bay from September to May, which supplements the oyster farms and local fish markets.

Kino Bay is home to seven (7) hotels and several tourist activities, mainly revolving around water sports.  Activities in Kino Bay include scuba diving, snorkeling, swimming, skiing, and sport fishing.  The white sand beach and turquoise waters are ideal for holiday and vacation trips.  The native Seri tribe offers visitors a glimpse into Mexican history through handcrafts, earrings, necklaces, shell ornaments, and knitted baskets dyed in the colors of the region.  They also lead visitors on tours of the Islands of San Esteban, Patos, and Tiburon.

The town borders the Sea of Cortez in the Gulf of California, which contains a variation of sub-aquatic marine life.  The coast contains colorful fish, thousands of small invertebrates, crustaceans, sponges, turtles, and occasionally sea lions.

Kino Bay is geographically divided into two parts: Kino Viejo, the old fishing village, and New Kino, where majority of the homes, hotels, and restaurants are located.  The residents of New Kino (where the area of consideration is located) are divided between Mexican citizens and foreigners primarily.
